Systematic position and nature of the pathogen: The causal agent of Northern Corn Leaf Blight (NCLB) is the fungus Trichometasphaeria turcica (teleomorph), which is also known by its anamorph stage, Exserohilum turcicum. The pathogen belongs to the Fungi kingdom, class Dothideomycetes, and order Pleosporales. It is a specialized necrotrophic fungal pathogen that predominantly affects maize crops and some related grass species.

Diseases and crops: This pathogen causes a widespread disease known as Northern Corn Leaf Blight. The primary host is maize (Zea mays). Symptoms start as small, oval, water-soaked spots on lower leaves that gradually expand into long, elliptical, tan-colored necrotic lesions. As the infection progresses, these lesions merge, covering significant portions of the leaf blade and hindering plant productivity.

Biology and life cycle: The pathogen survives the winter as mycelium and conidia in infected corn debris left on the soil surface. During favorable weather conditions in the spring and summer, conidia are dispersed by wind and rain splash to healthy leaves. The infection cycle repeats multiple times throughout the growing season, allowing for rapid spread of the fungus across fields.

Conditions for development and severity: High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures (between 18°C and 25°C) are optimal for disease development. The pathogen is highly destructive, as it reduces the green leaf area available for photosynthesis. This leads to poor grain filling, lodging, and reduced overall yield, with potential losses exceeding 30-50% in susceptible hybrids under favorable environmental conditions.

Protection and control measures: Effective management of Northern Corn Leaf Blight relies on a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:

  • Planting resistant or tolerant corn hybrids is the primary defense method.
  • Tillage practices that bury crop residues help reduce the initial inoculum load.
  • Crop rotation to break the cycle of pathogen persistence.
  • Foliar fungicide application (triazoles or strobilurins) is recommended when weather conditions favor disease progression and symptoms are visible.
