Description

Turnip crinkle virus (TCV) is a plant-pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Betacarmovirus within the family Tombusviridae. As a positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus, it is a significant pathogen that affects various economically important crops within the Brassicaceae family.

The primary hosts of this virus include turnips, oilseed rape, radishes, and various mustard species. Infected plants exhibit distinct symptoms such as severe leaf crinkling, mosaic patterns, chlorosis, and general stunting, which drastically reduce the photosynthetic capacity and overall yield potential of the crop.

The biology of the virus involves transmission through insect vectors, most notably flea beetles and other coleopterans that feed on host plants. The virus is also known to be easily transmitted mechanically. Wild cruciferous weeds act as vital reservoirs, allowing the virus to survive and persist in the agricultural landscape during off-seasons.

The spread of TCV is highly dependent on environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of insect vectors. Once an infection is established, the virus spreads systemically through the phloem to younger leaves and reproductive tissues, making the symptomatic plants primary sources of inoculum for the rest of the field.
