Systematic position and pathogen type: The genus Tylenchus belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, and order Rhabditida. These microscopic organisms are classified as soil-borne plant-parasitic nematodes. They possess a specialized stylet used to pierce plant cell walls, allowing them to feed on the cytoplasm of root epidermal and cortical cells.
Diseases and host crops: These nematodes are responsible for general stunting, chlorosis, and reduced vigor in a wide variety of plants, including cereals, vegetables, and ornamental crops. Unlike gall-forming nematodes, Tylenchus species typically cause diffuse damage to the root system, which disrupts nutrient and water uptake, often leading to poor overall plant performance.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves an egg stage, four larval molting stages, and the adult phase. Females lay eggs in the rhizosphere or occasionally within plant tissues. The duration of the life cycle is highly dependent on soil temperature and moisture levels, allowing for multiple generations per growing season under favorable environmental conditions.
Conditions for development and harmfulness: Tylenchus thrives in moist, well-aerated soils where the thin water films allow for movement toward host roots.
