Systematic position and pathogen type. Ulocladium atrum belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and genus Ulocladium. It is a filamentous fungus that acts as both a saprophyte and a facultative parasite. Known for its dark-colored conidia, it is a significant pathogen that colonizes dead or stressed plant tissues and can readily infect various economically important crops.
Diseases and susceptible crops. This pathogen causes leaf spots, stem lesions, and fruit rots. It is frequently identified on vegetable crops such as tomatoes, potatoes, onions, and various pulses. Additionally, it can infect seeds, leading to poor germination rates and dampening-off in seedlings, which is particularly problematic in nursery environments.
Biology and development cycle. The life cycle involves the production of multi-septate, dark-pigmented conidia that serve as the primary source of inoculum. These spores are disseminated primarily through wind currents, splashing rain, or irrigation water. The fungus survives unfavorable conditions as mycelium or chlamydospores in soil or decaying plant debris, allowing it to persist across multiple growing seasons.
Conditions for development and harmfulness. Development is favored by warm, humid environments, specifically temperatures between 20°C and 28°C and high relative humidity. The pathogen's harmfulness is seen in the progressive necrosis of plant leaves, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity and significant yield loss. In stored produce, it can lead to decay, rendering the crop unsalable.
Protection and control measures. Management strategies should focus on preventing the buildup of inoculum:
- Sanitation, including the removal and destruction of crop residues post-harvest.
- Improving greenhouse ventilation to reduce relative humidity.
- Implementing strict crop rotation programs to break the pathogen's lifecycle in the soil.
- Seed treatments with appropriate fungicides to protect seedlings during the early growth stages.
- Integration of biocontrol agents, such as Trichoderma species, to suppress fungal growth in the field.
