Urocystis elymi is a microscopic fungus classified within the order Urocystidales, family Urocystidaceae, and genus Urocystis. It is an obligate parasite that specifically infects members of the Leymus genus (lyme grass). This phytopathogen is the causative agent of smut disease, which significantly affects both the reproductive and vegetative stages of these grasses.
The disease is characterized by the appearance of elongated, dark, swollen sori on leaves, stems, and spikes. As the fungus matures, the host epidermis ruptures to release a large mass of black teliospores. Infected plants often show stunted growth, distorted stems, and failed seed development, resulting in a severe decrease in the biological productivity of the grass stand.
The life cycle of the pathogen begins with the germination of teliospores present in the soil or on the seed surface. Infection typically occurs during the host's seedling stage, shortly after germination. Once the fungus enters the host, the mycelium spreads systemically through the plant's intercellular spaces, colonizing tissues and eventually concentrating in reproductive structures for spore production.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Urocystis elymi. The fungus prefers moderate temperatures and high soil moisture during the emergence of seedlings, which promotes successful penetration. Teliospores are highly resilient and can remain viable in the soil for several years, making the pathogen difficult to eradicate once it has established itself in a field.
The economic damage caused by Urocystis elymi involves significant losses in seed yield and forage quality. Effective control and management strategies are essential to minimize the impact of this pathogen:
