It acts as an obligate parasite, strictly targeting species within the Trifolium genus. As a soil-borne organism, it causes specialized gall formation, distinguishing it from most other fungal pathogens affecting leguminous crops.
Diseases and affected crops: The pathogen is responsible for a condition known as clover tumor or crown wart. It affects various types of clover, including red and white clover. The primary symptom is the development of knobby, tumor-like galls on the crown, stems, and leaf petioles, which severely disrupt the plant's vascular system.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle revolves around resting spores found in the soil. These spores remain dormant for extended periods. When soil moisture is abundant, the spores germinate to produce zoospores. These mobile spores travel through the water film in the soil and penetrate the host tissue, initiating new infections during the growing season.
Developmental conditions and harmfulness: Wet, poorly drained soils provide the ideal environment for Urophlyctis trifolii to thrive. In regions with high rainfall or heavy soil texture, the disease can reach epidemic proportions. Infestation leads to stunted growth, reduced photosynthetic activity, and eventual plant death, causing significant yield losses in hay and forage production.
Control and management: Management strategies focus on breaking the infection cycle. A mandatory crop rotation period of at least 4-5 years is the most effective way to reduce inoculum levels in the soil.
