Description

Ustilago scitaminea (syn. Sporisorium scitamineum) is a basidiomycete fungus that acts as a serious pathogen of sugarcane. Classified within the order Ustilaginales, this fungus is a systemic parasite. It specializes in infecting sugarcane plants, redirecting the plant's metabolic resources towards the production of massive quantities of spores, which are released from a characteristic structure known as the "whip".

The most diagnostic feature of the disease is the emergence of a long, whip-like, black sorus from the apex of the sugarcane stalk. This whip is essentially a mass of teliospores held together by a thin membrane. Once the membrane ruptures, the microscopic spores are dispersed by wind and rain, allowing the pathogen to spread across vast areas and infect healthy buds on adjacent plants.

The life cycle begins when teliospores germinate on the sugarcane buds, typically at the apical meristem or in lateral buds. The fungal hyphae penetrate the growing tissue, and the infection becomes systemic. The fungus remains within the plant throughout its development, colonizing new tillers and ensuring that the pathogen persists in the stool for consecutive harvests.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease development, with warm temperatures and high humidity significantly promoting spore germination and infection. Sugarcane smut is particularly devastating because it is not limited by a single season; the fungus survives in infested soil and in vegetative cuttings. This makes the selection of planting material a critical factor in managing the disease.

Crop losses due to sugarcane smut can be severe, resulting in stunted plants, excessive tillering, and a significant reduction in sucrose accumulation. Effective management strategies include:

  • Planting smut-resistant or tolerant sugarcane cultivars.
  • Utilizing pathogen-free seed cane obtained through tissue culture or heat treatment.
  • Regular inspection of fields and rogueing (removing and destroying) infected plants.
  • Strict quarantine measures to prevent the introduction of the pathogen into new areas.
