Loose smut of wheat

Ustilago tritici

Description

Systematic position and nature of the pathogen: The causal agent of loose smut of wheat is the basidiomycete fungus Ustilago tritici. It belongs to the order Ustilaginales and is characterized by a high degree of host specialization, primarily targeting Triticum aestivum.

Diseases and host plants: The fungus causes loose smut, a destructive disease of wheat. The infection manifests itself at the heading stage, where the entire spike is replaced by a dark, sooty mass of teliospores, which eventually disperses, leaving only the bare rachis.

Biology and life cycle: The primary infection occurs during the anthesis stage of wheat. Spores are wind-borne and land on the stigma of healthy flowers, germinating and penetrating the developing ovary. The fungus remains dormant as mycelium within the embryo of the seed. Upon germination of the infected seed, the mycelium grows systemically within the plant to the developing ear.

Conditions for development and harmfulness: The development of the disease is highly favored by moderate temperatures and high humidity during the flowering phase of wheat. The economic impact is significant, as every infected plant produces no grain, leading to substantial yield losses in unprotected fields.

Protection and control measures: The main control strategy involves the use of systemic fungicides as seed treatments, which effectively eliminate the mycelium from the dormant embryo. Other critical measures include selecting resistant cultivars, using certified pathogen-free seeds, and maintaining proper field sanitation to reduce inoculum load.
