Valsa auerswaldii is an ascomycete fungus classified within the genus Valsa, family Valsaceae. As a significant phytopathogen, it primarily targets the cortical tissues and cambium layer of various deciduous trees. It is recognized as a causative agent of severe necrotic diseases that can lead to the systemic decline of orchards.
The fungus is responsible for various forms of bark necrosis and canker diseases. It affects a wide range of hosts, including pome fruits like apple and pear, as well as various stone fruits. The infection typically manifests as dark, sunken lesions on the bark, eventually causing the girdling of branches and trunks, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients.
The disease cycle begins with the entry of spores through wounds caused by pruning, insects, or environmental stress such as sunburn or winter damage. Inside the plant, the fungus colonizes the wood tissues. Under favorable conditions, it produces pycnidia and perithecia, which release masses of conidia and ascospores to infect neighboring plants or unaffected parts of the same host.
Development is most favorable in environments with high humidity and stagnant air. Trees weakened by drought, poor soil fertility, or inadequate maintenance are significantly more susceptible to infection. The pathogen thrives in dense orchards where moisture persists on the bark surface for extended periods, facilitating spore germination and penetration.
