Systematic position and pathogen nature: Valsa ceratosperma is a fungal pathogen classified within the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and order Diaporthales. It is a highly specialized ascomycete fungus known to cause severe necrosis in woody stems and branches. This pathogen is considered a significant threat to deciduous trees, particularly in managed orchard environments.
Host plants and diseases: The fungus primarily infects pome fruit trees, such as apples and pears, though it can also affect various stone fruit species. It causes a condition known as Valsa canker (often linked with Cytospora species). The disease manifests as sunken lesions on the bark, which eventually encircle the branch, leading to dieback and reduced fruit quality.
Biology and infection cycle: Infection occurs through bark wounds, including pruning cuts, sunscalds, or frost cracks. Once inside, the fungus invades the inner bark and cambium layers. The cycle completes with the production of fruiting bodies (stromata) that release ascospores, which are subsequently dispersed by wind, rain splashes, and sometimes insect vectors during the growing season.
Development and impact: Disease development is favored by cool, wet conditions and stressed host trees. Environmental factors such as drought, nutrient deficiency, or poor site conditions weaken the tree's natural defenses, making it susceptible to the colonization of Valsa ceratosperma. The economic impact is severe, resulting in permanent structural damage to the tree architecture and tree mortality.
Management and control: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. This includes maintaining optimal tree vigor through balanced fertilization and irrigation, protecting against winter injury, and ensuring clean pruning practices. Fungicidal treatments, specifically copper-based sprays, applied after pruning or during early spring, can help protect fresh wounds from initial spore colonization and limit the spread of the disease.
