The pear scab pathogen, Venturia pirina, is an ascomycete fungus classified within the family Venturiaceae. It is a highly host-specific plant pathogen that exclusively infects pear trees (Pyrus species). Unlike other fungi, it is distinct from the species that causes apple scab, making it a dedicated threat to pear production worldwide.
The disease affects all aerial parts of the tree, such as leaves, petioles, shoots, and fruit. Symptoms initially appear as small, olive-brown spots covered in a velvety coating of conidia. As the infection progresses, leaves may curl and drop prematurely. On developing fruit, the fungus causes dark, corky lesions that often crack, leading to significant deformation and making the produce commercially unmarketable.
The life cycle involves both sexual and asexual stages. The fungus typically overwinters as pseudothecia in fallen leaf litter. During the spring, primary infections are initiated by ascospores discharged from these structures during wet weather. Throughout the growing season, asexual conidia are produced on infected tissues, facilitating secondary infections that spread the disease across the orchard canopy.
Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of Venturia pirina outbreaks. High relative humidity, persistent rainfall, and temperatures between 15°C and 20°C are ideal for spore germination and infection. Orchards located in poorly ventilated areas or those with dense, unpruned canopies are particularly susceptible, as these environments provide the extended leaf-wetness duration required for the fungus to establish.
Successful management of pear scab requires a combination of sanitation and chemical control. Growers should focus on removing and destroying infected leaf debris to reduce primary inoculum. Proper pruning is essential to improve airflow, which helps dry foliage faster after rain. Chemical control involves the timely application of fungicides, particularly during the critical windows of bud break, bloom, and fruit set to prevent primary and secondary infections.
