The fungus thrives by invading host tissues, leading to localized infections and systemic health decline.
The diseases caused by this pathogen involve tissue necrosis and fruit decay. Verticillium theobromae is frequently associated with pod rot and stem damage, which compromises the integrity of the cocoa fruit and reduces the overall yield quality. The infection typically manifests as dark, necrotic lesions on the surface of the plant organs.
