European mistletoe

Viscum album

Description

European mistletoe (Viscum album) is an evergreen shrubby hemiparasite belonging to the Santalaceae family (formerly Viscaceae). It is a perennial plant that lives as an obligate parasite on the branches of various deciduous and coniferous trees. While it performs photosynthesis, it relies on the host tree to extract water and essential mineral nutrients through specialized structures, thus acting as a significant tree pathogen.

This parasite affects a wide range of woody species, including apple, pear, poplar, lime, birch, and several conifers. It invades the host tissue via haustoria—specialized roots that penetrate the wood and tap into the host's xylem. As the haustorial system grows, it disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, causing branch dieback, reduced vigor, and eventually the death of the host tree if the infection is heavy.

The life cycle of Viscum album is highly dependent on avian vectors. Birds consume the sticky white berries during late autumn and winter. The seeds, coated in a viscous substance called viscin, are deposited on tree branches through bird droppings. Upon germination, the radicle attaches to the bark and develops into a haustorium, which then secures the plant to the host's vascular system.

Environmental conditions conducive to the spread of mistletoe include a temperate climate and the presence of stressed or aging trees. In urban and orchard environments, the parasite can spread rapidly if left unchecked. The lack of natural predators and the wide mobility of birds allow mistletoe to colonize new trees effectively, especially in fragmented landscapes where host trees are vulnerable.

The economic and ecological damage caused by mistletoe includes diminished fruit production and increased susceptibility to secondary pests and pathogens. Management and control strategies include:

  • Physical removal of infested branches, cutting at least 20 cm below the point of mistletoe attachment.
  • Complete removal of heavily infected trees to reduce the local seed bank.
  • Regular winter inspections when mistletoe is highly visible, making it easier to identify and prune.
  • Improving overall tree vitality through proper fertilization and irrigation to strengthen natural defenses.
