Waitea circinata

Waitea circinata is a pathogenic soil-borne fungus belonging to the kingdom Fungi and the phylum Basidiomycota. Historically associated with the genus Rhizoctonia, it is now recognized as a distinct pathogen responsible for significant damage to turfgrasses, cereal crops, and various ornamental plants. It primarily targets the root system, crowns, and lower stems, leading to severe decay.

The primary disease caused by this pathogen is known as brown patch or rhizoctonia blight. On lawns and golf courses, it appears as irregular patches or rings of discolored, dying grass. In agricultural crops, it manifests as damping-off of seedlings, stunted growth, and root rot, which can lead to complete failure of the crop if conditions favor the pathogen.

The life cycle of Waitea circinata is centered on its persistence in the soil as mycelium or sclerotia embedded in plant debris. When environmental conditions become favorable, the fungus begins to colonize the roots and lower stems of susceptible hosts. Dissemination typically occurs through the movement of infested soil, water runoff, contaminated mowing equipment, or infected planting material.

Development and spread are heavily influenced by environmental factors. High soil temperatures (typically between 25°C and 30°C) combined with prolonged high humidity or excessive moisture in the canopy are critical triggers for infection. Poor air circulation and excessive nitrogen fertilization often exacerbate the severity of an outbreak by creating a favorable microclimate for fungal growth.

Control strategies for managing Waitea circinata require an integrated management program. Key practices include improving soil drainage to prevent waterlogging, aerating the turf or soil to increase oxygen flow, and managing nitrogen levels to avoid succulent, susceptible growth. Fungicide applications, including strobilurins and DMI fungicides, are often necessary during peak environmental risk periods to suppress the pathogen effectively.
