Waitea nuda is a basidiomycetous fungus classified within the order Cantharellales and family Ceratobasidiaceae. It is recognized as a significant soil-borne pathogen that primarily targets the roots and stem bases of various crops, including wheat and other graminaceous species, acting as a causative agent of root rot diseases.

The disease caused by Waitea nuda is characterized by root browning, necrotic lesions, and the eventual decay of the root system. This damage disrupts nutrient and water uptake, leading to stunting, chlorosis, and in severe cases, the death of young seedlings, which results in significant stand density reduction in fields.

The biology of this fungus is centered on its ability to survive in the soil environment as mycelia or specialized structures. It is primarily a soil-inhabiting organism that relies on moisture and root exudates to initiate its parasitic phase. Once triggered, the mycelium grows towards the roots, penetrating tissues and establishing the infection cycle.
