Description

The Watermelon silver mottle virus (WSMoV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Orthotospovirus and the family Tospoviridae. This virus is primarily responsible for the silver mottle disease in cucurbits. It poses a serious threat to agriculture by infecting a broad range of hosts, most notably watermelons, melons, cucumbers, and various leguminous or solanaceous plants.

Symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic spotting, mosaic patterns on the foliage, and a distinctive silvery or metallic luster on the leaves. As the infection progresses, affected plants exhibit stunted growth, leaf curling, and severe distortion. The fruit quality is also heavily impacted, often showing ring spots, necrotic patches, and irregular ripening, rendering the crop unmarketable.

The biological cycle of WSMoV is vector-dependent. The virus is transmitted in a persistent, propagative manner by thrips, particularly Thrips palmi. Larvae ingest the virus from infected plant tissues, and after a latent period, the insects remain viruliferous for the duration of their lifespan. This allows for rapid and sustained transmission across fields, as the insects move between plants to feed.

The spread and incidence of the disease are highly influenced by environmental conditions that favor thrips population growth, such as warm, dry weather. Furthermore, the virus relies on reservoir hosts, including various weed species found around agricultural land, which serve as overwintering sites for both the pathogen and its insect vectors, facilitating early-season outbreaks.

Management of WSMoV is challenging because viral infections cannot be cured with chemical sprays. Consequently, control efforts must be proactive:

  • Rigorous management of thrips populations using integrated pest management (IPM) practices.
  • Application of reflective mulches to deter insect vectors from landing on seedlings.
  • Removal and destruction of infected plants and surrounding weed hosts.
  • Selection of resistant or tolerant crop varieties to minimize yield losses.
