Description
Wheat dwarf virus (WDV) is a destructive plant pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family and the Mastrevirus genus. This single-stranded DNA virus affects wheat, barley, rye, and various wild grasses, causing stunting and severe reduction in grain yields. It is considered one of the most economically significant viral diseases affecting small-grain cereals globally.
The primary symptom of the disease is the severe dwarfing of infected plants. Affected crops exhibit excessive tillering, shortened internodes, and leaf chlorosis (yellowing) or reddening at the tips. Plants infected early in the season may fail to produce spikes, or the spikes produced are sterile, leading to substantial yield losses in agricultural production.
The virus is transmitted exclusively by the leafhopper Psammotettix alienus in a persistent circulative manner. The leafhopper acquires the virus while feeding on an infected plant and, after a short latent period, remains infectious for the rest of its life. The virus is not transmitted through seeds or soil, making the activity of the vector the primary driver of disease spread.
Epidemiology of the virus is largely determined by weather patterns that influence the life cycle of the leafhopper. Warm and dry weather conditions favor the multiplication of Psammotettix alienus populations. Mass migrations of leafhoppers from mature cereal crops or wild grasses onto newly emerged winter cereal seedlings are the primary cause of autumn field outbreaks.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the impact of the virus:
- Adjusting sowing dates for winter cereals to avoid peak leafhopper migration.
- Systemic weed management to eliminate potential virus reservoirs.
- Application of insecticidal seed treatments to protect young seedlings.
- Monitoring leafhopper populations to time any necessary insecticide applications.
