Description

Wheat spindle streak mosaic virus (WSSMV) is a significant soil-borne plant pathogen that primarily affects winter wheat. As a member of the Bymovirus genus, this virus is known for causing characteristic mosaic and spindle-shaped streaks on leaves, which appear during the early spring growth stages.

The virus is strictly dependent on the soil-borne plasmodiophorid fungus Polymyxa graminis for its transmission. This fungus acts as an obligate vector, harboring the virus within its resting spores, which allows the pathogen to persist in the soil for extended periods, even in the absence of a host crop.

The biology of the virus follows the infection cycle of the vector. When soil conditions are cool and moist, the resting spores of Polymyxa graminis release zoospores that infect the roots of wheat seedlings. The virus particles enter the plant cells through this biological vector, subsequently moving systemically throughout the plant tissue.

Environmental factors play a crucial role in disease development and spread. The virus thrives in conditions characterized by cool temperatures (ranging from 10°C to 15°C) and high soil moisture. These environmental parameters are typically present in late autumn and early spring, making these the periods of highest infection risk for winter wheat fields.

The economic impact of the disease includes stunted plant growth, reduced tillering, and lower grain yields due to poor head development. Management focuses on preventive strategies, such as planting resistant cultivars, which is the most effective approach. Additionally, ensuring good field drainage and practicing crop rotation to reduce the buildup of Polymyxa graminis populations in the soil are essential for mitigating losses.
