Description
The causative agent of potato late blight is the oomycete Phytophthora infestans. Taxonomically belonging to the kingdom Chromista, this pathogen is infamous for causing the Irish Potato Famine and remains one of the most destructive agricultural threats globally, capable of destroying entire fields within a very short period.
The primary disease caused by this pathogen is late blight. It attacks all aerial parts of the potato plant, including leaves, stems, and petioles, as well as the tubers. On the leaves, the infection initially appears as water-soaked spots, which eventually turn dark brown or black, surrounded by a yellowish halo during moist conditions.
The life cycle involves both sexual and asexual reproduction. Under favorable conditions, sporangia are produced and dispersed by wind or splashing rain. Once they land on a susceptible host, they release motile zoospores that penetrate the plant tissue. The fungus survives unfavorable periods in infected tubers left in the soil or in storage.
Environmental conditions are critical for disease propagation. Late blight thrives in cool, wet weather, particularly when temperatures are between 15°C and 22°C and humidity levels remain high for extended periods. Dew and persistent rain allow the pathogen to multiply rapidly, leading to the quick spread of spores across the crop canopy.
Control strategies must be integrated. Growers should prioritize the use of certified blight-free seed, select resistant potato cultivars, and implement rigorous fungicide programs. Monitoring systems that track weather patterns to predict infection windows are essential for optimizing the timing of chemical treatments to ensure effective crop protection.
