The Pea mosaic virus (often associated with strains of Bean yellow mosaic virus) is a widespread phytopathogenic virus belonging to the Potyviridae family. As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on the host plant's cellular machinery to replicate. It targets leguminous species, causing severe systemic infections that disrupt normal plant development and physiological processes.
The disease manifests through distinct symptoms, primarily mottled, mosaic-like patterns on foliage, leaf crinkling, and stunting. In severe infections, plants exhibit distorted pods and reduced yield quality. The presence of the virus suppresses the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to chlorosis and general physiological decline, which directly translates into reduced economic performance for farmers.
The virus is primarily transmitted by aphids in a non-persistent manner.
