Xiphinema, commonly known as dagger nematodes, is a genus of plant-parasitic nematodes within the family Longidoridae. These microscopic roundworms are widely recognized in agronomy due to their unique feeding mechanism involving a long, needle-like stylet that allows them to pierce root cells while remaining outside the root tissue.

The primary economic significance of Xiphinema species stems from their capacity to transmit plant viruses, specifically nepoviruses (nematode-transmitted polyhedral viruses). These viruses cause severe economic losses in crops such as grapes, strawberries, and various fruit trees by reducing vigor, fruit quality, and overall plant longevity.

The biology of Xiphinema involves a complex life cycle. Females deposit eggs in the soil, and the juveniles undergo several molts before reaching maturity. These nematodes exhibit long generation times and are highly sensitive to environmental fluctuations. They depend on moisture levels and host root availability to thrive and migrate through the soil profile.
