Xiphinema diversicaudatum, commonly known as a type of dagger nematode, is a significant plant-pathogenic nematode belonging to the family Longidoridae. As an ectoparasite, it utilizes a long, needle-like stylet to penetrate the root tissues of various hosts. It is taxonomically classified within the Dorylaimida order and is recognized globally for its role in agriculture as both a direct pest and a biological vector.

This nematode has a broad host range, severely impacting crops such as strawberries, raspberries, fruit trees, and various ornamental species. The direct feeding damage causes root systems to become stunted, deformed, and chlorotic. However, its most critical impact is the transmission of nepoviruses, such as Arabis mosaic virus and Raspberry ringspot virus, which cause devastating diseases in berries and horticultural crops.

The life cycle of Xiphinema diversicaudatum involves several larval stages, all of which occur within the soil environment. The species is relatively long-lived compared to other nematodes, allowing it to persist in the field for several years even in the absence of suitable hosts. Its migration speed is low, but it maintains a consistent presence in the rhizosphere where it finds optimal feeding conditions.

Environmental factors heavily influence its distribution, with sandy loam and moist soils providing the ideal habitat for movement and reproduction. The nematode is primarily distributed through the movement of infested soil on machinery, equipment, and contaminated nursery stock. Because of its deep-seated nature in the soil profile, management is notoriously difficult once a field is infested.

Effective control strategies require an integrated management approach:

  • Quarantine measures and the use of certified, nematode-free propagation material.
  • Soil fumigation or the application of specialized nematicides before planting perennial crops.
  • Strategic fallowing and crop rotation to reduce soil populations below the economic threshold.
  • Monitoring soil samples to identify infestations before planting sensitive crops.
