Description
The willow eriococcid (Latin: Acanthococcus salicis) is a sap-sucking pest belonging to the Eriococcidae family within the order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a specialized pest that primarily targets trees and shrubs within the Salicaceae family, causing significant physiological stress to both wild-growing and ornamental specimens.
This insect is primarily found on willows (Salix spp.) and poplars (Populus spp.). It feeds on the phloem sap of the host plant, positioning itself in the crevices of the bark or on small twigs. Due to its cryptic morphology, which often mimics the texture and color of the bark, the pest can remain undetected until the infestation reaches a critical level.
The life cycle of the willow eriococcid is closely synchronized with the phenology of its host. The insects typically overwinter as second-instar larvae or mated females hidden within the bark fissures. As spring temperatures rise, the females resume feeding and begin producing egg sacs. The resulting nymphs, known as crawlers, are the mobile stage of the species and are responsible for spreading the infestation to new areas of the tree.
The damage caused by the willow eriococcid manifests as reduced tree vigor, twig dieback, and bark deformation. The removal of large quantities of plant sap weakens the tree's immune system, making it more susceptible to secondary environmental stresses.
