Description
The Orchid stem borer (genus Acythopeus) is a destructive pest belonging to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are highly specialized, often targeting specific genera of orchids and posing a significant challenge to both commercial growers and private collectors.
Commonly affected plants include various species of Dendrobium, Phalaenopsis, and Vanda. The pest is frequently introduced into new environments through imported plants, making strict botanical inspection an essential part of plant husbandry in professional and domestic settings.
The life cycle of Acythopeus is characterized by internal development. Adult females deposit eggs directly into the orchid's stem or pseudobulb. Once hatched, the larvae feed on the internal tissues, excavating tunnels that provide both nutrition and protection from predators and environmental stressors. Pupation occurs within these tunnels, completing the cycle inside the host plant.
Damage caused by the orchid stem borer often appears as small entry or exit holes on the plant surface. As the larvae tunnel through the tissue, the structural integrity of the orchid is compromised, leading to wilting, yellowing, and eventually tissue necrosis. If left untreated, the infestation can lead to the loss of the entire plant or significant decline in flower production.
Effective management strategies require a combination of preventative and curative actions. It is crucial to quarantine any new additions to your collection for several weeks. When an infestation is confirmed, affected stems must be surgically excised and disposed of carefully. Systemic insecticides are generally the most effective way to reach the larvae hidden inside the stem tissues, provided they are applied according to the label instructions.
