Grey weevil

Curculionidae

Description

The grey weevil (Tanymecus palliatus) is a member of the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest due to its polyphagous feeding habits, which allow it to infest various economically important plant species across temperate regions.

This beetle species poses a threat to numerous crops, including fodder beet, garden cabbage, winter barley, domestic apple trees, and winter wheat. The damage is particularly severe during the seedling stage, as the adult insects feed on the foliage, frequently leading to stand failure.

The lifecycle consists of a single generation per year. Adults hibernate in the soil, emerging in early spring to feed on sprouting plants. After mating, females lay eggs in the soil near the host plants. The larvae subsequently develop underground, feeding on the roots and further compromising the health of the crop.

Symptoms of infestation include characteristic scalloped edges on the leaves. In extreme cases, the insects may completely defoliate seedlings, forcing farmers to re-sow the fields. The feeding of larvae on roots is often overlooked but contributes to stunted growth and increased susceptibility to secondary infections and drought stress.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Key strategies include:

  • Implementing crop rotation to disrupt the lifecycle.
  • Deep autumn ploughing to destroy overwintering sites.
  • Using insecticide-treated seeds to protect early growth stages.
  • Applying foliar insecticide sprays when pest populations exceed economic thresholds.
These measures collectively reduce the pressure of the grey weevil on production systems.
