Weevils of the genus Ceutorhynchus belong to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These small but highly destructive beetles are characterized by their elongated snouts (rostra), which they use to bore into plant tissues for feeding and oviposition, making them difficult to control once they are inside the plant.

These pests have a wide range of host plants, causing significant economic losses. They primarily target Brassicaceae crops, such as winter rapeseed and cabbage. However, they also infest fodder beet, soybean, sunflower, winter barley, apple trees, and alfalfa. The economic impact varies based on the specific species and the developmental stage of the affected crop.

The biology and life cycle of the weevil are synchronized with the host plants' growth stages. Adults typically overwinter in the soil or under plant debris, emerging in early spring. Females lay eggs inside stems, petioles, or flower buds. The resulting larvae feed internally, which stunts the plant's growth and directly affects yield quality and quantity.

Symptoms of infestation include small feeding punctures on leaves, deformed or wilted stems, and damaged seed pods. Because the larvae develop within the plant tissue, they are protected from contact insecticides. Furthermore, the feeding galleries created by the larvae serve as entry points for pathogens, leading to secondary fungal or bacterial infections that can devastate a field.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Key strategies include:

• Crop rotation to break the pest's lifecycle;
• Destruction of wild cruciferous weeds that serve as reservoirs;
• Monitoring adult populations using yellow water traps;
• Timely application of systemic insecticides before egg-laying occurs;
• Deep plowing after harvest to reduce overwintering populations.
