Description

Systematic position: the orchid weevil (Acythopeus aterrimus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a specialized pest known to infest tropical orchid species, making it a significant concern for collectors and commercial growers.

Host plants: the primary targets of this weevil are various orchid species, including members of the genera Dendrobium, Phalaenopsis, and Cattleya. It typically thrives in controlled environments like greenhouses where host plants are densely concentrated.

Biology and life cycle: adult weevils are small, black beetles. Females lay eggs inside the plant tissue, such as stems or pseudobulbs. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae bore into the interior of the plant, feeding on the internal tissues throughout their developmental stages, which is the most destructive part of their life cycle.

Character of damage and harmfulness: internal feeding causes structural damage that disrupts the transport of water and nutrients. Externally, the presence of the pest is marked by small exit holes and necrotic spots.
