Description

Systematic position. Adoretus lithobius belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Scarabaeidae, and subfamily Rutelinae. It is recognized as a specific type of leaf-feeding beetle that poses a localized but significant threat to agricultural productivity in various dry-climate regions where it is found.

Host plants. This pest is a polyphagous insect. It causes damage to a variety of plants, including commercial fruit trees, vineyards, legumes, and several vegetable crops. Due to its broad host range, it can migrate between different plant species, making infestation management more complex for farmers.

Biology and life cycle. The beetle undergoes a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adults are nocturnal, preferring to feed during the night and seeking shelter in the soil or under leaf litter during daylight hours. Larval stages are subterranean and feed on organic matter or root systems, which can sometimes result in hidden damage before the adult population emerges.

Damage and harmfulness. Adult beetles are responsible for the primary damage by feeding on the leaf lamina. They typically consume the tissue between veins, resulting in a skeletonized leaf appearance. Severe infestations lead to rapid defoliation of plants, which severely restricts their growth, reduces yield, and weakens the plant against secondary pathogens or environmental stressors.

Protection measures. Effective control requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. This includes soil tillage to disrupt larval development, the use of light traps to monitor and reduce adult beetle populations, and targeted insecticide applications. Maintaining healthy plant growth through proper irrigation and fertilization also helps mitigate the overall impact of the pest.
