Chinese rose beetle

Systematic position: Adoretus sinicus, commonly known as the Chinese rose beetle, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. It is a highly destructive, invasive species that poses a significant threat to agriculture and urban landscapes in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult beetles are nocturnal, brownish, and approximately 10 to 12 mm in length. They spend their daylight hours hidden in the soil. The larval stage occurs underground, where they feed on organic matter and roots, while adults emerge at night to feed on foliage.

Host range and damage: This pest is a prolific polyphage, capable of damaging over 250 plant species. Preferred hosts include roses, grapes, hibiscus, various fruit trees, and vegetables. Adults cause extensive damage by skeletonizing leaves, eating the soft tissue between veins, which often results in complete defoliation of the host plant.

Economic impact: Heavy infestations can severely stress plants, reduce ornamental value, and lead to significant crop losses in agricultural settings. Because the damage is rapid and occurs overnight, large populations can destroy plants before growers realize there is an infestation, necessitating proactive management.

Management strategies: Effective control of Adoretus sinicus requires a combination of methods:

• Installation of light traps to capture adult beetles during their peak nocturnal flight.
• Application of appropriate foliar insecticides during periods of heavy feeding.
• Use of biological control agents, such as entomopathogenic nematodes or fungi, to target larvae in the soil.
• Implementation of good cultural practices, including sanitation and removal of debris to reduce breeding sites for the larvae.
