Adoretus beetle
Adoretus versutus
Description
Systematic position. Adoretus versutus is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae (subfamily Rutelinae). This species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in various tropical and subtropical regions, often causing localized outbreaks that devastate plant foliage.
Affected crops. This beetle is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of plant species. Significant hosts include important economic crops such as cocoa, coffee, tea, and sugarcane. Additionally, it frequently damages fruit trees and numerous ornamental shrubs, making it a threat to both commercial plantations and landscape gardening.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Adoretus versutus consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Larvae are typically soil-dwelling and feed on decomposing organic matter or the roots of living plants. Adults are nocturnal, active primarily after sunset, and typically remain buried in the soil or under leaf litter during the daylight hours to avoid predators.
Damage and economic impact. The primary injury is caused by adult beetles that feed on leaves. They consume the interveinal tissue, resulting in a characteristic "skeletonized" appearance of the foliage. Heavy infestations can lead to complete defoliation, which severely stresses the plant, reduces fruit production, and can be fatal to young saplings or weakened trees.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include:
- Deploying light traps to attract and capture adults during peak flight periods.
- Applying insecticides during the evening when beetles are actively feeding.
- Utilizing biological controls, such as entomopathogenic fungi, to target larvae in the soil.
- Maintaining clean cultivation areas to reduce hiding spots for the beetles.
