Adoryphorus couloni, commonly referred to as the red-headed pasture cockchafer, is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This species is native to Australia and is recognized for its devastating impact on pasture health and agricultural productivity.

The larvae of this beetle cause extensive damage by feeding on the root systems of various plants. While they show a strong preference for pasture grasses, they also cause severe economic loss in cereal crops like wheat, barley, and oats. In some instances, they have been known to attack potato tubers, rendering them unmarketable.

The life cycle of Adoryphorus couloni is typically univoltine, spanning one year. Adult beetles are primarily active during the autumn months. After mating, females deposit eggs into the soil. The resulting larvae remain in the soil profile throughout their development, consuming roots and organic matter, which hides them from early detection.

Damage symptoms usually appear as patches of dying or stunted vegetation across the field. Because the larvae sever the roots just below the soil surface, the affected plants quickly lose their ability to uptake water and nutrients, eventually wilting and dying. Large areas of pastures can be completely destroyed if the larval density is high enough.
