Description
Aegorhinus superciliosus, commonly known as the Chilean beetle, is a significant pest belonging to the family Curculionidae within the order Coleoptera. Originally from South America, this snout beetle has become a major challenge for commercial fruit and berry production due to its destructive larval and adult feeding habits.
This beetle is highly polyphagous, targeting a wide range of crops. It is particularly notorious for damaging berries such as blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries. In addition to small fruits, it frequently infests deciduous fruit trees like apples, pears, and cherries, causing economic losses in both nurseries and established orchards.
The life cycle of the Chilean beetle involves a distinct underground larval stage, which is the most destructive phase. Adult beetles emerge from the soil to feed on foliage and buds at night, while the larvae feed exclusively on roots and root collars. The overlapping generations can make controlling this pest a long-term endeavor.
The damage caused by Aegorhinus superciliosus is often twofold. While leaf feeding by adults causes cosmetic damage and reduced vigor, the destruction of the root system by larvae is fatal.
