Pistachio psyllid

The pistachio psyllid (genus Agonoscena) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. This insect is highly specialized, primarily targeting the pistachio tree (Pistacia vera). It represents a major challenge for commercial pistachio production globally due to its potential to rapidly colonize entire orchards.

The pest causes direct damage by feeding on the sap of young pistachio shoots, buds, and leaves. During their feeding process, both nymphs and adults extract vital nutrients from the plant. This mechanical injury, combined with the removal of cell sap, leads to severe leaf distortion, chlorosis, and stunted growth, which ultimately affects the tree's ability to produce nuts.

The biological cycle of Agonoscena is closely synchronized with the phenology of the pistachio tree. The overwintering adults emerge in early spring, seeking tender new growth for oviposition. The insect undergoes several generations per year, with population numbers peaking during the hottest months, which requires constant surveillance by agronomists to prevent outbreaks.

Beyond direct sap-sucking, these insects excrete large quantities of honeydew, a sugary substance that accumulates on the leaves. This deposit serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi, which coat the foliage in a dark film. This fungus blocks sunlight and hinders photosynthesis, causing premature leaf drop and weakening the overall health of the tree.

Management and protection strategies include:

• Implementation of sticky yellow traps to monitor population spikes during the growing season.
• Application of chemical treatments, preferably systemic insecticides, during the initial phases of nymph development.
• Promoting healthy tree growth through appropriate fertilization and irrigation to mitigate stress.
• Proper sanitation practices, such as removing infested plant debris and leaf litter after harvest.
• Encouraging the presence of natural predators, such as lacewings and ladybirds, to maintain a biological balance.
