Systematic position: The pistachio psyllid (Agonoscena pistaciae) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. This insect is recognized as one of the most critical pests affecting commercial pistachio cultivation, often leading to severe economic losses if not managed properly.

Host plants and damage: The primary host is the common pistachio tree (Pistacia vera). Both adults and nymphs feed on plant sap by piercing the leaves and tender shoots. This feeding activity causes leaf curling, yellowing, and eventually premature leaf drop, which significantly weakens the tree's vigor and development.

Biology and life cycle: Agonoscena pistaciae overwinters in the adult stage, typically hiding within bark crevices or sheltered areas of the orchard. In spring, adults emerge to lay eggs on the newly developing foliage. Throughout the growing season, the pest can complete multiple generations, with populations often peaking during the hot summer months.

Pest impact: A major feature of psyllid infestation is the excretion of honeydew, a sticky substance that coats the leaves. This honeydew facilitates the growth of sooty mold, a fungal disease that darkens the foliage. The mold blocks photosynthesis, further stress-inducing the tree and resulting in lower fruit yields and reduced crop quality.
