Description

Systematic position. Anoeconeossa assimilis belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. These small, jumping insects, commonly known as psyllids or plant lice, are specialized pests that specifically target host plants within the Myrtaceae family, particularly eucalyptus trees.

Host plants and pest status. The primary hosts for this species are various species of the genus Eucalyptus. In forestry and nursery settings, these insects act as significant pests, as their feeding behavior can severely impact the growth and physiological health of young trees, leading to economic losses in timber production.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the eucalyptus psyllid consists of three distinct stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Females deposit eggs on young foliage. Upon hatching, nymphs go through several instar stages, often producing waxy secretions or protective covers that shelter them while they feed on the phloem sap of the host plant.

Nature of damage. Damage is caused by both adults and nymphs piercing the leaf tissue with their mouthparts to extract sap. This feeding process causes leaf curling, chlorosis, and premature leaf drop. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and further reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity.
