Description

Systematic position. Anoeconeossa is a genus of jumping plant lice belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. These insects are highly specialized pests known for their impact on specific host plants, primarily within the Eucalyptus genus.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this pest are Eucalyptus species. Anoeconeossa populations thrive where Eucalyptus trees are cultivated, whether in native forestry settings, commercial plantations, or ornamental landscapes where these trees are introduced.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, five nymphal stages, and the adult stage. Both nymphs and adults feed by inserting their stylets into plant tissue to extract sap. Development is strongly synchronized with the flush of new foliage, which is the preferred site for feeding and oviposition.

Damage and severity. Infestation results in leaf distortion, chlorosis, and premature senescence of the foliage. Heavy infestations lead to significant honeydew production, which promotes the growth of sooty mold, severely reducing the photosynthetic efficiency of the tree and causing overall decline in vigor.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) for this species involves the strategic use of systemic insecticides during peak activity periods. Biological control, utilizing natural enemies like parasitoid wasps, is also encouraged to maintain population levels below the economic threshold.
