Description
Systematic position. Agonoxena is a genus of moths belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Agonoxenidae. These small, slender insects are recognized in agricultural science as specialized pests that primarily target monocotyledonous plants, specifically those within the Arecaceae family.
Crops affected. The primary hosts for this pest include a wide variety of palm trees. It is particularly notorious for causing damage to coconut palms (Cocos nucifera) and numerous ornamental palm species found in tropical and subtropical landscaping, as well as in greenhouse conditions.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Agonoxena consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the leaves, where larvae emerge and begin feeding on the epidermal tissue. The larvae typically live under thin silken webbing or mine the leaf tissue, creating distinctive marks before pupating in a spindle-shaped white cocoon attached to the underside of the leaf.
Character of damage and economic significance. The damage is characterized by grayish-white patches on the leaves, resulting from the larvae scraping off the green tissue. As the infestation progresses, these patches coalesce, causing entire leaves to wither and turn brown. This aesthetic and physiological damage significantly weakens the tree, reduces its growth rate, and may lead to yield losses in coconut-producing plantations.
Protection measures. Effective management strategies involve:
- Cultural practices such as pruning and destroying heavily infested leaves to reduce larval populations.
- Encouraging natural biological control agents, including parasitic wasps that target the larval stage.
- Applying selective systemic insecticides when infestation levels exceed economic thresholds.
- Implementing strict quarantine protocols to prevent the movement of infested nursery stock between geographic regions.
