The Willow bark moth (Chrysoclista lathamella) is a species of moth belonging to the family Cosmopterigidae, known as the concealer moths. It is a specialized pest that specifically targets willow trees (Salix), spending most of its larval life cycle hidden beneath the bark.
The life cycle involves an adult stage during the summer months, followed by egg-laying on the bark of host trees. The larvae emerge and immediately bore into the bark, constructing long, irregular galleries. These galleries provide both protection and a food source for the developing larvae as they feed on the inner tissues and cambium layer.
This pest is primarily found on various species of Salix, impacting both ornamental trees in landscapes and wild willow populations. Because the larvae are wood-boring, the infestation is often not noticed until significant physical damage to the tree bark has already occurred.
