Description

The genus Blastodacna belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Agonoxenidae. One of the most significant species in this group is the apple bud moth (Blastodacna atra), which is recognized as a specific and sometimes destructive pest of cultivated fruit trees.

The primary host plant for this pest is the apple tree. The larvae exhibit a strong preference for dormant and swelling buds, later moving into the young growing shoots. While less common, they can occasionally be found on pears, but apple orchards remain the main target for their infestations.

The biological cycle is typically univoltine, meaning there is only one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in small hibernacula made under the bark or in crevices near the buds. As spring temperatures rise, the larvae emerge to feed, boring directly into the developing buds, which effectively halts the development of leaves and blossoms.

The damage caused by Blastodacna is particularly problematic because it occurs early in the season when the tree is most vulnerable. By destroying the buds, the larvae reduce the tree's photosynthetic capacity and fruit-bearing potential. If left unmanaged, the cumulative damage to shoots and buds can significantly diminish overall orchard yield.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this moth. Preventive strategies include the pruning and removal of infested twigs during the winter or early spring to destroy the overwintering larvae. Chemical control should be timed carefully, targeting the period before the larvae enter the buds, using selective insecticides to ensure that the pest population remains below economic thresholds.
