Taxonomy: The coconut leaf moth, Agonoxena argaula, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Agonoxenidae. It is a highly specialized agricultural pest primarily known for its impact on palm plantations across the Pacific region, where it can cause significant economic losses if not managed correctly.

Host plants: The primary host for this species is the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). However, research indicates that it can also infest various other palm species within the Arecaceae family. This wide host range allows the pest to persist in diverse environments, from commercial plantations to residential and ornamental landscape settings.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Agonoxena argaula consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. The female moth deposits eggs on the underside of the palm leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin feeding, creating characteristic galleries within the leaf tissue. The duration of each developmental stage is heavily influenced by ambient temperature and relative humidity levels.

Damage and severity: Larvae of the coconut leaf moth feed on the parenchyma of the leaves while remaining beneath the leaf epidermis, which creates distinct, semi-transparent, and eventually brown mine-like tracks. Severe infestations lead to extensive necrosis of the foliage. This reduces the photosynthetic efficiency of the palm, causing a decline in overall tree health, stunted growth, and a reduction in the number and quality of coconuts produced.

Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this pest.

• Biological control: Encouraging or releasing parasitoids like Apanteles agonoxenae.
• Monitoring: Using pheromone traps to track population spikes.
• Sanitation: Removing and destroying heavily infested fronds to reduce the local moth population.
• Chemical control: Utilizing systemic insecticides when biological and cultural controls fail to keep populations below economic injury levels.
