Taxonomy and classification: The apple pith moth (Blastodacna hellerella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Agonoxenidae. It is a specialized insect pest known for its capacity to compromise fruit quality by developing internally within the generative parts of host plants during the growing season.

Host plants: This pest primarily affects apple trees (Malus domestica). While apple is the preferred host, the larvae can also be found on hawthorn and occasionally other members of the Rosaceae family. This host specificity makes it a particular concern for commercial apple orchards and home gardens alike.

Biology and life cycle: The species overwinters as larvae, often hiding within bark crevices or fruit remnants. In the spring, they pupate, and adult moths emerge to mate. Females lay eggs on flowers or young fruitlets. The life cycle is tightly synchronized with the host tree's phenology, ensuring the larvae have immediate access to food upon hatching.
