Description

The narrow-headed borer, or Agrilus dimidiatus, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. This wood-boring insect is a significant pest known for infesting various trees and shrubs, where its larvae live and feed beneath the bark, often causing severe physiological stress to the host plant.

The primary damage is inflicted by the larvae, which create extensive tunnels in the cambium layer. This activity disrupts the vascular system, preventing the effective transport of water and nutrients throughout the tree. While adults may feed on foliage, the larvae are the stage responsible for structural damage that leads to tree decline.

The life cycle typically spans one to two years depending on environmental conditions. Adult beetles emerge in spring and early summer to mate. Females then deposit eggs into cracks in the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the inner bark layers, constructing winding galleries filled with frass, which effectively ring-bark the tree internally.

Symptoms of infestation include premature leaf yellowing, branch dieback, and stunted growth. A key diagnostic feature is the presence of D-shaped exit holes on the bark surface, created by emerging adults. If left unmanaged, heavy infestations can lead to the rapid mortality of the tree, especially during periods of drought or high stress.

Effective management strategies against Agrilus dimidiatus involve a combination of approaches:

  • sanitation, including the removal and destruction of heavily infested trees;
  • maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization;
  • applying systemic insecticides during the peak flight period of adult beetles;
  • monitoring populations using pheromone or visual traps to time interventions correctly.
