Weevil of the genus Alcidodes

The genus Alcidodes is a group of beetles belonging to the family Curculionidae (true weevils), order Coleoptera. These insects are recognized as significant agricultural pests in various parts of the world, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Adults are characterized by their elongated snouts, which are utilized for both feeding and drilling oviposition sites into plant tissues.

Alcidodes species are known to infest a diverse range of host plants, including fruit trees, cotton, legumes, and several technical crops. Their impact is particularly severe on perennial plants, where larvae can tunnel into woody stems and branches, leading to structural damage and reduced photosynthetic capacity of the plant.

The biological cycle of these pests follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs inside plant tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae reside internally, feeding on the cambium, sapwood, or fruit pulp. This internal feeding pattern serves as a protective mechanism for the larvae against environmental factors and many foliar-applied pesticides.

Damage assessment typically reveals wilting of terminal shoots, formation of gall-like swellings, fruit drop, and stunted growth. The economic damage caused by Alcidodes infestation often involves both direct loss of yield and indirect costs associated with the secondary infection of tunnels by pathogens and fungi, which can lead to premature plant death.

To mitigate the risks associated with this pest, an integrated pest management (IPM) approach is essential:

• Implement regular field scouting to detect early signs of adult feeding.
• Prune and destroy infested plant parts to reduce the next generation's population.
• Apply systemic insecticides during the peak activity of adult weevils before egg-laying occurs.
