The cotton stem weevil (Alcidodes gossypii) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a specialized threat to cotton cultivation, causing economic losses by targeting the structural integrity of the plant.
This pest primarily attacks plants of the genus Gossypium. By colonizing the stems, the insect establishes a sheltered environment that allows it to feed and develop while remaining largely protected from external environmental factors and certain types of surface-applied chemical treatments.
The life cycle of Alcidodes gossypii follows complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females deposit eggs into the stem tissue. Once hatched, the larvae excavate tunnels inside the stem, feeding on internal plant tissues, which disrupts the vascular system of the host plant.
Damage caused by this weevil is characterized by the development of galls and swellings on the stems.
