Description
Taxonomic position. This species belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (true weevils). Similar to other members of the Alcidodes genus, this pest is characterized by a distinctive rostrum structure and a hard exoskeleton, which provides high resilience in tropical environments.
Host plants. The primary distribution area is centered in tropical regions of Asia. The pest poses a significant threat to various fruit and cash crops. Field reports frequently record damage to sweet potato crops, legumes, and several types of fruit trees, where it can cause localized but substantial economic losses.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is strictly dependent on the host plant. The female lays eggs directly into the plant tissues, such as stems or shoots. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the plant and create internal tunnels. Pupation occurs within these damaged tissues, making the pest difficult to detect during its early developmental stages.
Damage and severity. The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which feed on the internal tissues of the stem, effectively disrupting the plant's vascular system. This leads to wilting of branches or entire plants, stunted growth, and a reduction in fruit quality. Infestations often result in the death of young shoots and a major decrease in crop marketability.
Control measures. Managing this weevil requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:
- Removal and destruction of infested stems and damaged plant parts.
