The primary host for this pest is sugarcane. Both the adult beetles and their larval stages reside in the soil, focusing their feeding activity on the root system and the underground basal stem of the plant. This feeding behavior disrupts nutrient uptake and reduces the overall vigor of the host plant.

The life cycle of Alissonotum pauper follows a complete metamorphosis involving egg, three larval instars, pupa, and adult stages. The larvae are primarily subterranean, thriving in soils with high organic content. Adults are typically attracted to light and are known for their ability to burrow into the ground to lay eggs, making them difficult to target during the early stages of infestation.

The damage caused by this pest is often characterized by the destruction of primary and secondary roots, leading to plant stunting and chlorosis. In severe infestations, plants exhibit significant lodging and a reduction in sugar content, which directly impacts harvest yield. Secondary infections by pathogens often follow the physical damage caused by the larvae.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural control methods, such as deep tillage to disrupt the soil environment for larvae and pupae, are fundamental. Additionally, the application of soil-incorporated insecticides at the time of planting has proven effective in minimizing population levels. Regular scouting using light traps for adults is also recommended for timely detection and intervention.
