Alder bark beetle
Alniphagus aspericollis
Description
The alder bark beetle (Alniphagus aspericollis) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). It is a specialized insect that predominantly attacks trees of the genus Alnus. Due to its life cycle, it is considered a significant threat in forest management and ornamental landscaping where alder species are present.
These beetles target various species of alder. While they typically prefer trees already weakened by drought, disease, or mechanical damage, they are opportunistic and can easily infest healthy stands if environmental conditions favor a population explosion. The presence of these pests is a common concern in riparian forests and moist ecological zones.
The biological cycle of Alniphagus aspericollis is closely linked to the seasonal changes in the host tree. Adults emerge in spring, seeking suitable bark surfaces to bore into. Females construct egg galleries beneath the bark, and upon hatching, the larvae tunnel perpendicular to the maternal gallery. This activity systematically destroys the phloem layer, effectively girdling the tree.
The damage caused by this pest is primarily internal, making it difficult to detect until clear symptoms appear. Externally, one might see exit holes, frass (sawdust-like material) on the bark, and foliage chlorosis or sudden wilting. Because the gallery formation restricts sap flow, the tree's health declines rapidly, often resulting in tree mortality within a single growing season.
Management strategies focus on sanitation and preventive silviculture. Key measures include:
- Prompt identification and removal of infested trees before the next generation of beetles emerges.
- Maintaining forest health through proper spacing and moisture management.
- Removal and destruction of slash and woody debris where beetles might overwinter.
- Deployment of monitoring traps containing specific pheromones to track populations and reduce beetle density.
