Amerrhinus pantherinus is a species of weevil belonging to the family Curculionidae (order Coleoptera). Known as a significant palm pest, this insect causes considerable damage to various palm species in its natural habitat and beyond, often compromising the health and structural integrity of both ornamental and agricultural trees.
The host range of this pest primarily includes various palm species. Given its specialized feeding habits, the weevil prefers to colonize healthy, mature trees, although stressed plants are often more susceptible to large-scale infestations, which can lead to rapid decline if not managed correctly.
The biology of Amerrhinus pantherinus involves a complex cycle where the female oviposits into the host plant tissues. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the interior of the palm, creating galleries as they feed.
