Ampeloglypter
Description
Systematic position. Ampeloglypter is a genus of beetles belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These weevils are specialized pests of viticulture, having evolved to thrive within the tissues of grapevine, often causing localized but significant damage to the plant structure.
Host plants and damage. The primary host is the grapevine. Adult beetles feed on buds and tender shoots, while larvae bore into the petioles or young vine stems. This activity causes the affected plant parts to wilt, turn necrotic, and often break off, leading to stunted growth and reduced vigor of the vine.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is closely synchronized with the phenology of the grapevines. Adults overwinter in the soil or leaf litter near the base of the vines. In the spring, they emerge to feed, mate, and deposit eggs directly into the grape tissue, where the emerging larvae complete their development protected from external environmental factors.
Economic importance. While localized infestations may seem minor, heavy pressure from Ampeloglypter can severely impact vineyard health. Premature leaf drop and shoot breakage reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the vines, which in turn leads to poor carbohydrate storage, lower winter hardiness, and decreased fruit yield in subsequent growing seasons.
Control measures. Integrated pest management strategies are recommended:
- Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infested shoots and fallen leaves.
- Cultivation of the soil beneath the vines to disrupt the pupation sites of the weevils.
- Timed insecticide applications directed against overwintering adults in the early spring.
- Regular monitoring of vineyard rows during the rapid growth phase of the vine.
