Ampeloglypter ater, commonly referred to as the grape cane borer, is a destructive pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. As a specialized phytophagous insect, it poses a recurring challenge to viticulture by focusing its biological activity exclusively on the grapevine, often leading to localized outbreaks in vineyard environments.
The pest primarily targets cultivated grapevines. Both the adult beetles and their larvae cause significant physiological damage to the host plant. The impact is most severe during the active growing season, when the vine requires intact pathways for nutrient transport to support fruit development and foliage growth.
The biology of Ampeloglypter ater is centered on the female's habit of ovipositing in young grape canes. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the internal tissues, creating tunnels within the stems.
